The collection contains material by and about Warren Chappell found laid in or with books from the collection of Warren Chappell. Among the items are a catalog of books in the Chappell's library, 1978; sketches and pen-and-ink drawings by Chappell; an essay "Notes on 'A Nude' 1962" by Isabel Bishop; papers pertaining to the exhibit "The imprints of Gloomth"; Chappell's "Silver Jubilee Citation" from the Limited Editions Club, 1954; a bound volume containing original pen sketches for "Don Quixote"; a typographical trial "Romeo and Juliet" from a Shakespeare series, 1940; a mock-up of "Three for Jack"; two dummies for an undated Book of the Month Club publication; a sample binding done by Kingsport Press for Alfred A. Knopf; and a blank book in which four pages of Marryat's "Mr. Midshipman Easy" were pasted. Fritz Kredel was a renowned and versatile illustrator and artist. He found early success in Germany, culminating in a Gold medal for Book Illustration at the 1937 Paris World Exposition. Hermann Zapf was a master of type design, book design, and calligraphy. Born in Nuremberg in 1918, he began working in publishing as a photo-retoucher, and was inspired to be a letter-designer by an exhibition of Rudolph Koch's works.
